Position: Choir Director

St Paul Lutheran Church is excited to announce that we are seeking to hire a part-time Choir Director. St. Paul is an active rural congregation that is located in the heart of Le Center, MN. This position will be working with a new choir that is being formed this year with interest that has been gathered by the congregation. The position will be contracted from approximately September through May of each year (beginning and ending with other church programs that generally follow the school year – approx. 37 weeks). Each week, the director will be allotted 3-4 hours which will include a combination of preparation, rehearsal, and Sunday worship services (occasional performance at other worship services is possible).

The Choir Director will be a coach for choir members but will also serve a vital role in leading the entire congregation in worship. Music is a hallmark of the Lutheran faith tradition, and this role will work to support members of our community in utilizing their gifts and talents.

Job Responsibilities

  • Selecting appropriate musical pieces for the choir to perform, based on the style/theme of the worship service and in accordance with Lutheran theological practice.
  • Providing guidance and direction to choir members during rehearsals to achieve the correct tone, pitch, rhythm, tempo, and harmony.
  • Collaborating with and receiving direction from church staff and musicians (i.e., pastor, organist, office manager, etc.) to ensure that the choir is seamlessly integrated into the overall worship service.
  • Scheduling choir rehearsals, encouraging members to attend and coordinating around other church events/needs.
  • Serving as a spiritual leader for the choir, providing guidance and encouragement.

Requirements

  • Sound musical knowledge and/or appropriate professional training. Experience as a choir director is preferred.
  • Familiarity with liturgical worship and practice is preferred.
  • Must have a passion for music and for coaching individuals at various levels/abilities.
  • Be able to interpret and train on various types/styles of music.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and listening skills.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule that might include weekday evenings (for rehearsals) and weekends (particularly Sunday morning).
  • Being Lutheran is not required. However, we expect that the Choir Director will uphold the Lutheran faith in their work.
